A FUTURE WORLD RECORD ... but not quite ...

Hello !

UK Rock Challenge now know of enough teams / team members coming to The Scoop (across the river from the Tower of London) on July 8th to ALMOST make the attempt on the world record for the biggest-ever dance class at 1pm a winner but we're not up to the magic 2,000 people yet ... not quite ... aarrgggghhh !

JUST 250 MORE PEOPLE saying they're coming would make everyone much more relaxed about the whole thing :)

If you're at a school where you know some people are coming BUT they haven't yet told anyone at UK Rocka HQ that they're coming, get them to get in touch (either zoie@rockchallenge.co.uk or me on the usual john@arrowsmith.demon.co.uk) and let us know how many (and where from ... don't want to run the risk of double-counting the future prospects :)

If you're an ex-Rock Challenger and you're coming to take part in the record attempt but you haven't yet told anyone at UK Rocka HQ, then PLEASE get in touch - same details as above :)

If you're a Rock Challenge family member and you're coming to take part in the record attempt but you haven't yet told anyone at UK Rocka HQ, then PLEASE get in touch - same details as above :)

A map of the area can be found here
The Scoop is an open-air performance space JUST to the left of the big red blob on the map (City Hall).
On Google Earth it's at 51 30 18 N 0 04 45.45 W
London Bridge Underground station (Northern and Jubilee lines) is the nearest.

Don't forget ... teams (both north and south) will be there doing their routines from 11 till 4 as well as taking part in the world record attempt at 1pm so DO tell anyone thinking of coming along to join us to PLEASE let us know - details as before ! (Yes, this IS a numbers game ! :)

Hopefully BBC London and CBBC Newsround will also be there to record the attempt ... it seems likely that they will ...

See you there ? Hope so !

Hey John - it's holly from Hornsea School !!!! I was performing in the 'Walk Through The West End' show tonight and was just wondering what you thought of our performance ? I saw you in the audience, i'm sure, and i just want to say thank-you for coming to watch and supporting us !!
We are all looking forward to london on july 8 sooooo much although it's a shame some dancers cannot be there due to holiays. Bless Mrs Bristowe and Mrs Hylton for having put up with us all and for all the hard work they have done. We are all so grateful !
I'm delighted that Wendy and I knew about your show in advance, Holly, and were able to make it over to see it tonight !
We thought you guys were BRILLIANT - you should all be so proud !
Have a great last two nights - we enjoyed it soo much that yes, we'd come and see you again but we're in Derbyshire tomorrow and know you're a sellout for Friday.
See you at The Scoop !

Very sad news about Iain Alley. An unsung hero making some amazing sets. R.I.P.
Vanessa Geib (Firpark)

Woo ... Well Done, Winni ! Can't believe it ... "Most Entertaining" out of the whole country :D
Well done to all the rock 08 Dancers And Crew. Also big thanks to year 11 students - dancers and for doing hair and makeup.
And A BIG BIG thanks to Wilko, Mkenzii and Clarke :D
Wooo ! We Made Bransholme Proud ! x

Love - hollie (Winifred Holtby) xx

Those of you who have been involved in Aberdeen events and Northern Finals over the past few years will have seen the work of Iain Alley, who led the set design and building team for Peterhead Academy.

A deserved Rock Challenge Award Winner for his work, Iain tragically lost his life in a road accident on 22nd June 2008.

All of us from Peterhead will remember his gentleness, patience and grace, as well as his practical skills in turning simple materials into mountain ranges, fairytale castles and all manner of props and devices.

We extend our love and support to Susan and the family at this sad time.

Iain Small (Set and Stage Crew, Peterhead)

We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2008 National Awards !

We hope that all the nominated teams take great pride in receiving that nomination - which is a great achievement in itself - even if you didn't then go on to win the National Award in that category.

You can read all the nominations and the names of the eventual winners by clicking on this link

In addition I'd like to take this opportunity to announce the winners of another couple of our initiatives:

  • Our 2008 National Short Film Competition overall winner was Bitterne Park School from Southampton in Hampshire for their video following through from the creation of their piece right up till their final performance, utilising live footage set in a comic-book style page background in a slick, excellently edited and produced piece. This was not only Bitterne Park's first time entering the Short Film Competition, but also their first year entering Rock Challenge so congratulations on their success.
  • This year we also ran
the first ever Rock Challenge Photograph Competition, won by Pete Bartlett of Toynbee School, Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. The judges loved the action shot and thought it encapsulated the 'Spirit of Rock Challenge' fantastically well, so a huge congratulations to him for winning the competition in this, its first year.
Over 100 photos were submitted to us for consideration, which is fantastic news and really promising for the future !

So that's it in terms of the 2008 competitions - congratulations once again to all the schools who took part this year regardless of any awards won ! We think 2008 was an outstanding year and we can't wait to see what 2009 brings !

Tim (UK Event Manager)

Some 30 more schools / colleges have indicated that they wish to be involved, but organiser Zoie Golding (UK Rock Challenge Producer) is sending out THIS SHOUT FOR 700 MORE TO SAY THEY'LL COME !

There's only 14 DAYS LEFT till the big day on Tuesday July 8th so come on ... SAY YOU'LL BE THERE TOO !

The BBC London and CBBC Newsround teams have indicated that they are planning on being there to do some filming of the record attempt, it looks as if this will be the first time since 1998 and 2000 that any teams from both the north and the south have been in the same space together, and if it all goes as planned you will have taken part in something that will both break a world record and will also do a great job in publicising the existence of UK Rock Challenge to all those people and places that have still never heard of it :)

We'll see you there !

Thanks to Vanessa Geib for finding this next item for us ! It comes from the list of Motions and Amendments laid before the Scottish Parliament, and reads as follows:-

"S3M-1925 John Wilson: Firpark School: That the Parliament congratulates the pupils and staff of Firpark special educational needs school in Motherwell for its success at the recent Carlisle Rock Challenge heat on Friday 2 May 2008, where the school took third place overall and also won the Cumbria Healthy Schools Award for the Best Set Design and the Staging and the Be Your Best Foundation Award for Media Management and further notes the tremendous effort, dedication and commitment of the pupils and staff at the school in staging an energetic, fun and polished performance."

Hello !
Well, the very last event of the 2008 Tour fast approaches (the Carlisle Junior Event on Friday the 13th ... hmmm, who chose THAT date ?? :) but in the meanwhile I thought that you MIGHT like to hear that Global Rock have adopted a new video-player system for their website and it's really rather nice ...
You can already see some of the improved quality of playback on the Australian pages ... pop over and have a look at (for example) Parkdale Secondary College's performance of "Boudica - Queen of the Iceni" at http://www.rockchallenge.com.au/videos/grc_player_parkdale.php or (another example and only go here if you don't mind Robin Hood being somewhere other than in Sherwood Forest ;-) then watch Harristown State High School's performance of "Wanted - Robin Hood" at http://www.rockchallenge.com.au/videos/grc_player_harristown.php
Can't wait to see some UK teams' videos up on the UK pages ! I don't yet know when that will happen but hopefully it isn't going to be too long now ...
John (editing :)

Zoie and the Crew will be at the Scoop (an open-air performance space next door to City Hall, London, across the river from the Tower of London) on July 8th ... so too will several UK Rock Challenge teams. Why ?
Well, there's a day of activities running from 11am to 4pm but at 1pm Zoie and the Crew are going to try and break the world record for the biggest-ever dance class !

For further details, CLICK HERE.
See YOU there too ?! :)

June 6th

Dear all,

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to bring forward the deadline for entries into the 2008 Rock Challenge Photography Competition.

Originally the date was June 30th, but this has now changed to Thursday, June 12th so that they can be judged in time to reveal the winner alongside the announcement of the winners of the 2008 National Awards.

If you or any or your students or staff were planning to enter this competition then please ensure you or they send through the entries as soon as possible to tim@rockchallenge.co.uk or Wessex House, Upper Market Street , Eastleigh, Hampshire , SO50 9FD

Also, just a quick reminder that (hopefully) next Friday, June 13th, we will be announcing the nominations for the 2008 National Open and Premier awards. The nominations and eventual winners are decided by judges different to those at the heats and are judged not only based on the live performances at the heats and finals, but done also based on the performances as seen on DVD. The nominations are announced via email and on the website so make sure you keep an eye out and see if your school gets a nomination.

All the best - Tim (Event Manager - UK Rock Challenge ®)

Well done to the UK's Northern Prem champions, Longcoft School, who get a news item in the online version of the "BEVERLEY GUARDIAN" newspaper :)

OK ... first of all i'll start with a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to RPCC for their 6th place at the Southern Premier Finals ! What an achievement for your first year as a Premier team! After seeing all of the hard work that the whole team put in over the past 8 months it was well deserved, especially as the standard was so high.

I also want to say "Thank-you with a Hug" to everyone involved in the very embarrassing (but GOOD embarrassing !)presentation of my '10 year' Award during the day at the Premier final. I had absolutely no idea that was going to happen but when i look at it i always smile.

It's hard to believe that in my first Rock Challenge in 1997 i was a year 10 performer. Our performance was on a very low budget, we had no scenery and our costumes were just white t-shirts, black trousers and trainers !!! One more performance for me in 1998 and then i began helping out the schools both i and my husband worked in with choreography, hair and make-up, set and costume.

It has been amazing to see the change from 1997 to 2008. It brings so many people together and though the aims are the same, the atmosphere and the feeling of electricity both when rehearsing through the year and at the actual event has grown hugely. One example this year was when all of the students piled out onto the steps outside the Portsmouth Guildhall while others danced in a group on the precinct. Everyone was cheering each other on and talking to each other having a great time.

One thing i am sure of is that i always want to be involved in Rock Challenge and i always encourage as many people as possible to be involved in some way, no matter how small a part they play. I love it and i'm sure they will too !

Mrs Ballard (Regents Park Community College)

June 5th

Anybody know who won the short film comp ?
You're not the only one asking ... HOWEVER, it DID just dawn on me 2nite that the 2008 Tour isn't over yet, is it ! (There's the Carlisle Junior event still to come and presumably someone there could be planning on entering.)
So ... guess we'll all have to wait a bit longer !
John on the laptop in darkening Derbyshire

I am so proud of Driffield school. They had to wait until last and didn't get on stage until nearly 11 pm yet still gave a fantastic performance - well done everyone !
Can anyone tell me where they are placed and if they are still a premier team, as I can't wait for next year !
Thank-you, Driffield.
A proud parent
I would suggest asking Mr J Watson at the school, proud parent :)

Well Done to all the other schools who were in the NORTHERN PREMIER FINAL, and THANKS TO ALL ROCKA CREW AND THE MHS TEACHERS !
Tom (Matthew Humberstone)

Well done to the Mackay State High School team in Australia, who got their recent win reported in the online version of the "Daily Mercury" newspaper. Meanwhile, the all-boys brand-new team from St. Mary's College in Queensland get a "looking forward to the first-ever entry" report in the online version of the "Toowoomba Chronicle" newspaper :)

This is mainly for teachers / directors / props / make-up / technicians.
In the April online issue of the magazine "Stage Directions" there was an article headed "Custom-making realistic prop drinks" in which the writer describes using something - among other things - called slush powder. You'll need to keep it in a fridge in between shows (but it looks like it might be a fun thing to try in an end-of-term Food lesson :))
You can read the article here:- http://tinyurl.com/68w8yd
In the May issue of "Stage Directions" there are two articles that someone might find handy to know about for a future school production or future Rock Challenge performance. The first is on page 42 and describes ways in which to help make your makeup supplies last longer ("to the bottom of the pack" is the line here) and also make them safer, healthier and more economical to use. On page 52, meanwhile, is an article describing a neat solution to a director's request to make a Bible "glow" up into the face of the actor in the epilogue in a production of "Joseph".
The May issue's articles won't be on their website until the end of June - and even then, there's no guarantee that either of these articles will be chosen. If you're a Drama and / or Rock Challenge teacher or you work in theatre, then the best way to make sure that you never miss an issue of the magazine is to subscribe, in which case you get a monthly email allowing you to download the latest full pdf version. It's free, it's often useful, and you can sign up through this link:- http://tinyurl.com/56cr4e

Already been asked (by "hsj" ?) and answered by Sarah from Thornton and someone anonymous, Stuart ! It's apparently "E for Electro" by Johnny Crockett :)

Congratulations to Matthew Humberstone for getting a report on their Northern Final performance (and video highlights too) in the web edition of the "GRIMSBY TELEGRAPH" newspaper !

June 2nd

Dear all
Well, although the 2008 Rock Challenge tour isn't completely over
(what with the first Carlisle Junior event happening on Friday 13th) I just thought I'd write a quick 'end of tour' message nonetheless.

Massive congratulations to all of the schools who took part this year and the young people, staff, parents and communities who helped to make the 2008 events so fantastic. The bar is being raised every year in terms of the standard of performance and the atmosphere of enthusiasm, dedication and excitement that we see at the events, and it's down to all the people involved.

Particular congratulations to all of our finalist schools and of course to Petersfield, Bullers Wood, Ravens Wood, South Holderness and Longcroft for winning their respective finals and Barton, All Saints', Solent, and Foulds and Christchurch for winning their Junior Rock Challenge events, but everyone did outstandingly this year so all schools everywhere should be proud of their achievements.

On a personal note I'd just like to say that this has been my tenth year being involved with Rock Challenge so thank you very much to everyone who helped to make my tenth year so brilliant (and to everyone who was there on Portsmouth Day Four who helped me celebrate getting my ten year frame - a very embarrassing experience, but nice as well so thank-you :). I was a performer back in Rock Challenge 1998 and have seen the event grow and grow on all sides - can't wait to see what the next ten years bring.

Good luck to all those who have done exams or have exams left to do and I hope that everyone has a brilliant summer, whether it be holidaying, relaxing, working ... or coming up with ideas for what is sure to be another spectacular year next year. Roll on 2009 !

All the best - Tim (UK Event Manager)

A huge well done to everyone at Hornsea !! I was lucky enough to see you perform at the showcase event and you really were incredible. It was definitely a well-deserved 2nd place and 6 awards at the final. What an achievement once again. You should all be so proud of youselves, especially Mrs Hylton who works so hard and puts so many hours in year after year. It's much appreciated !!

Well, what can I say ??!!! Congratulations, Longcroft ! I think that might have to be the proudest moment in 7 years !!!! You have all worked so hard and I am on cloud 9. I am so lucky and privileged to work with such talented, hardworking students.
I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Longcroft team. This has to be the most amazing experience and I am so grateful to you all - we are a TEAM and I can't imagine any production without you
Thank-you also to the most amazing support from parents ! Without your time and energy running your children to and from rehearsals we wouldn't have been able to produce such a piece.
Well done to all the other schools - what an amazing day ! It still amazes me how friendly, warm and supporting you all are of each other. That is such a positive memory I take away with me every year when it's all over.
Congratulations to Hornsea and Buttershaw - two amazing pieces.
Looking forward to next year already !!! The last question I was asked before I got into my car in the early hours was "What are we doing next year ?" Aaaaggghhhhhhhh :)

Hi all!
Well, wasn't it just a FANTASTIC weekend in Grimsby this weekend ?! That ten-hour drive home was a long journey yet again, but totally worth it.
Want ti say huge congrats to the rocka team for (almost) finishing another fantastic year on the tour. I'm sure '09 will be even bigger and better. ONLY 8 MONTHS TILL ABERDEEN! (Big shout-out to John who was fabulous as usual. See you in Aberdeen ?) (Ed: Ohhhh yes ! See you there :)
I want to Congratulate Longcroft and Hornsea for outstanding performances Saturday night. While so different they were both out of this world (and I'm gonna be talking about that waterfall for weeks.)
Friday was sensational too. Massive congrats to Southy. Well done, guys, you were awesome. And Torry too. Thanks for the support you gave us all day. It really was a special experience being at finals with you guys and I really was gutted not to have you coming to premiers with us. I hear you were fantastic and I can't wait to see the DVD.
But Peterhead, what can I say ! Well done, guys. We had a lot of tough situations to deal with over the 48 hours, from injury and breakdowns to flight delays and set malfunctioning but you took it all in your stride and I've never been prouder than that 8 minutes you put in onstage. Outstanding performance and second place! I'm so happy for you all.
Hugest Congrats have to go to Emma Marshall, of course, who took to liaison teacher like a fish to water. You did such an amazing job and you should be so proud of what you've achieved.
It's been hard work but well worth it. Too many others to mention just now but the committee, the parent helpers, teacher helpers, teachers' parents' helpers (lol) and ex pupils all completely invaluable. You know who you all are. Thanks for everything you did.
Let's go to premiers and knock their socks off!

I am so proud of every member from the Driff team. After being demoted to the open and then coming back up to the premier we have really tried so hard this year. Everyone gave 110% and that's what matters - our performance on the night was the best we have ever done it and i'm so proud of you all
As a 6th-form committee we worked incredibly hard this year, but we aren't going to be downhearted because we are still in the premier and we performed our best.
The teachers have been amazing, and the stage crew - even though you've had no adult guidance the set design, the building and the painting was brilliant. Mrs Ventress - once again our costumes were perfect. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work.
Even though it was my final year of rock challenge, i'll be there next year to support Driffield, who i know will still have team spirit all the way
